2021 Thanksgiving Synopsis

Synopsis
We can summarize this text into three letters, ROI or better known as Return Of Investment. If we had a BTB (Blessed To Build) last Thanksgiving 2020, we can consider our 2021 Thanksgiving as a “ROI” Investing in God’s kingdom, whether for future leaders, pastors, missionaries, and church planters. God wants us to remember that He supplies everything we need according to the riches of His glory, and that God doesn’t just want to bless us so we can meet our own needs, but that He does it so we can meet the needs of others. The heart of Thanksgiving is generosity.

November 07 - Kick–off Sunday
Invest Generously
Ecclesiastes 11:1 & 2 ESV
1Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days.
2 Give a portion to seven, or even to eight, for you know not what disaster may
happen on earth.”

The idea expressed here is one of open-handed investment in abundance. The Hebrew word for “cast” is to "send away", to "let loose", and “to give over”. One view is that the instruction to “cast your bread upon the waters” has to do with international trade or business. The principle is that, if you invest your “bread” or “grain” wisely, in a wide-ranging market, you will garner a return. So is generosity, giving as widely as possible: "Give portions to seven, yes to eight, for you do not know what disaster may come upon the land" (Ecclesiastes 11:2). This, though, is not limiting us to how many we should have on our help list. A couple of Bible translations bring out this meaning. The eternal investment includes living for God’s glory and the good of others.

Other translations include:
“Ship your grain across the sea; after many days you may receive a return” (NIV).
“Invest your money in foreign trade, and one of these days you will make a profit” (GNT).

On this Sunday, the pastor/speaker may focus and challenge the congregation about faith in investing in the work of the Lord. He/she can also deal with faith, trust, and risk-taking, - for, you know, not what disaster may happen on earth. Talk about life involves both risk and opportunity to give generously, and because our investment has no guarantee of perfect return, - may here on earth and not in heaven - we need to trust God and believe that He is calling us to wisely invest our lives in His cause.

November 14
Week 1: Invest Bountifully
Ecclesiastes 11:3
“If the clouds are full of rain, they empty themselves on the earth, and if a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where the tree falls, there it will lie.”

This is the certainty of giving and receiving, in God’s economy we give, and then we receive so that we can give again. When one is full like the clouds, one should pour it to benefit others; it rains down softly and gently, and then comes plentiful showers upon the earth, without distinction to refresh and make the land fruitful. The same is true for everyone who is richly or bountifully blessed by God so that he or she can shower to others.

One should not keep it to themselves and for their own use only, but should consider that they are blessed to be a blessing. “The tree that falls to the ground, be it to the south or to the north, there, it will lie”, this phrase teaches us that, wherever you plant your seed, there you will see it grow and bear fruit. Quoting from Ray Stedman “Where God has put you in your present circumstances that is where you are to give and to meet the needs around you." The divine principles of sowing and reaping can be seen clearly in these pictures.

On this Sunday, the pastor / speaker may focus and challenge the congregation to give where God is using them as of the moment, be it their resources, talents, or abilities. This is your opportunity to open new ministries or open recruitment for current ministries. This passage in Ecclesiastes teaches us about certainty. You can also insert our vision about the Julius Hall.

Week 2: Invest Expectantly

Ecclesiastes 11:4-5
“He who observes the wind will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap. 5 As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything. ”

John Maxwell
“The desire for a safe, worry-free environment stands in the way of every great endeavor. But the truth is that as a leader you have to take risks to achieve success. As the saying goes: "There are no short cuts to any place worth going."

This is where everyone’s faith will be challenged and put into action. This passage tells us not to consider circumstances, dictate when you give or plant. We are to plant in all seasons at all times. We are instantly ready for every season. When we feel ready to work and when we do not feel ready. Sowing is an act of faith. Ecclesiastes 11:4-5 tells us that if we wait for the right conditions to sow, we will never plan in faith because our senses will always tell us that the conditions are not right.
Our logics will never approve of our faith in action; but as a child of God, we walk by faith, not by sight God determines what will be, and His work is beyond our ability to control or understand. Accepting reality, the best we can do is to be intentional about our stewardship, rather than being paralyzed (or blindsided) by uncertainty.

On this Sunday, the pastor/speaker may ask somebody to testify about trusting God even through a tough time, maybe a lost dream, a lost plan, or a lost opportunity because of the pandemic, or maybe because of fear of our present circumstance, and how he/she was able to recover because of a renewed faith in God.

Week 3: Invest Faithfully
Ecclesiastes 11:6
6 “In the morning sow your seed, and at evening withhold not your hand, for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good.”

This is “Giving with Confidence” at its best. King Solomon calls us to go all-out, to invest our time, talents, and treasures wisely, and to maintain an attitude of thanksgiving, even while acknowledging the realities of a troubled situation. Like a farmer who can’t control or predict the wind or rain (verses 1-5), this is not an excuse for him not to sow in the morning and also in the evening. Only God knows which will succeed. It could be both!

The phrase "withhold not your hand" literally means “do not rest your hand.” God gave us the energy to make every effort, to go all-out, so we should be intentional about investing in every moment.

On this Sunday the pastor may remind the congregation about the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-8); though the main point is the word of God, the principle of sowing and reaping is still the same. Some may fail to bring forth fruit; but surely, those that are invested in good soil produce much as had been planted.

December 5 - “The Day”:
Week 4 Invest Thankfully
Ecclesiastes 11:7-8
“Light is sweet, and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.
8 However many years anyone may live let them enjoy them all. But let them remember the days of darkness, for there will be many. Everything to come is meaningless.”

Christian investment isn’t focused on making the most of our time, but is focused on glorifying God by doing our best to manage His resources wisely and well, then trusting Him for the results. Our aim for our life should be in the direction of God’s glory, and then we will enjoy His blessings. May it be, those blessings will be material; perhaps they will be spiritual; perhaps both. But we can be assured of one thing that in the end — “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed” (Romans 10:11 NASB).

We know the future will include days of darkness and days of light. When we live with an investment attitude, we won’t fear what might be. We will not worry over possible future days of darkness. As the farmer sows his seed in the morning as well as the evening, we as disciples/mentors should remain productive and keep on investing in the lives of others, whether or not we are living in days full of light or darkness.

On this Sunday, the pastor/ speaker will not only ask the congregation to give the best on the basket but also the best of their life to serve the Lord. Technically, ALL are called as a full-time minister of the Lord, but this is also an opportunity to challenge those who want to go full-time in serving the Lord in faith.

December 12 Victory Sunday
Week 5 Invest Joyfully

Luke 6:68 Message Translation
“Give away your life; you’ll find life given back, but not merely given back—given back with bonus and blessing. Giving, not getting is the way. Generosity begets generosity.”

Christian grows in generosity and we know that investing isn’t focused on making the most money. Christian investing is focused on glorifying God by doing our best to manage His resources wisely and well, then trusting Him for the results. Our aim for our life should be in the direction of God’s glory, and then we will enjoy His blessings. Perhaps those blessings will be material; perhaps they will be spiritual; perhaps both.

We give because generosity helps us achieve God’s purposes in our lives. By giving, we develop the inner qualities of generosity. Generosity is not a spiritual attribute someone acquires apart from the practice of giving. We cannot become generous and cling to everything we have without letting go. The opposite of generosity is greediness, selfishness. These are not qualities that lead to life, and so by our giving, we cultivate a different nature inside ourselves. But we can be assured of one thing that in the end — “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed” (Rom. 10:11 NASB)
